Below is a series of pictures
of an organic vegetable patch that turned and unused area of
garden into a fresh food laden bounty.
The area was previously
unfenced and open to all kinds of wildlife especially deer and
rabbits looking for a free dinner! To combat this, we erected a
chestnut post and rail fence (sometimes known as Sussex Fencing)
and raised each post to a little over 6 foot. Attached to the
fencing was chicken wire for the lower 3 feet to discourage
rabbits and other small animals and stock fence to upper 3 feet
to prevent the deer from jumping over.
The area to be used (9x15
meters) suffered from a heavy clay base only 2 or 3 inches below
the ground surface. To make sure the area drains, we have
integrated an 80mm perforated pipe running through each bed
which drains some 30 feet away into the driveway ditch. Along
with each bed being raised, this allowed the area to drain
perfectly with no standing water.
The project was completed in
early may of 2010. Each plug plant and/or seed was organically
sourced and has been maintained in such a manner with no use of
pesticides. To control the slug population, we placed 2 beer
traps in each bed which worked wonders. We even used organic
ale! Since May the 4 beds have produced a wonderful crop of
fresh organic vegetables and salads. |
